Barack Obama seemed to mix up black television sitcoms “Sanford and Son” and “The Jeffersons” in a speech Wednesday, where he was making the point that if Social Security had ever been privatized—as Republicans tried to do a few years ago, folks invested in the stock market would have been whacked with giant losses because of the economic meltdown.
“Can you imagine if you had your Social Security invested in the stock market these last two weeks, these last two months.
You wouldn’t need Social Security. You’d be having a, ya know like Sanford and Sons, ‘I’m coming Weezy.”
One of Fred Sanford’s signature lines was ‘I’m coming Elizabeth.”
Weezy was the nickname for Louise Jefferson.

One of the great characters in Sanford and Son was the angry irritable Aunt Esther. Now, just who does Aunt Esther remind you of??? Hmmmm?

On the subject, have you ever watched Sanford and Son? Fred Sanford (Redd Foxx, a native St. Louisan) sounds a lot like the black 1970s version of Archie Bunker.

To QD:
“Fred Sanford (Redd Foxx, a native St. Louisan) sounds a lot like the black 1970s version of Archie Bunker….”
Perhaps so but O’Connor’s character was always painted by lib reviewers as a hardened bigot while Foxx’s character was just, well, cantankerous.
Remember when Red Foxx held out for a new contract that paid him just $1 more than Carroll O’Connor? Funny that Sanford & Son’s ratings went up when he wasn’t on the set.

That’s right and nobody ever called Sanford a ‘Racist’. Only we Whites can be racist.

I used to watch “The Jeffersons”, all the time as a kid. I always thought Sherman Hemsley was a riot. The old ghetto comedies of the 70’s are a nostalgic glimpse back, compared to the white-hating propaganda being spewed out today.

Both of these comedy shows would be applicable to a U.S. with Obama as president. Some blacks would be “Movin’ on up” while the rest of the country will become a junk yard with a “Donk” in most every yard.

@Question Diversity,
In actual fact, both shows were remakes of British originals: Fred Sanford was a black, American version of Old Man Steptoe (from Steptoe and Son); Archie Bunker was an American version of Alf Garnett (from Till Death Us Do Part).

To Deporter,
Thanks for a good laugh and an astute observation!
Now just imagine that McCain does win and passes an amnesty. What do you think the chances are, that Michelle O will show up, shout: “You old fool, you old heathen…” and chase him around the White House swinging at him with her purse?
Not likely, but the image is funny!

Sandford and Son was a great show - had authentic incite in to real Black culture, good and bad.
Fred Sandford’s dominating religious Aunt Esther is very authentic Black American and I like these types of Black women as they are not at all scared of corrupt, immoral, criminal Black men.
Also, the character Rollo is really good - never has a job and no real interest in getting one and Fred Sandford recognizes him as a no good thief. But Rollo has his charms.
Another great show along this lines was the Amos and Andy TV show. The best character is the Kingfish’s wife Saffire - the most terrifying, dominating Black women in popular culture ever - and straight out, dead on.
THe Kingfish keeps a picture of his wife on his desk and every time he looks at it he recoils in terror.

I think I’m willing to forgive Obama on this one. He probably isn’t into television reruns.

The fact that he doesn’t know, only proves how inexperienced this man is. If he does not even know his own black culture, how can he understand how to run the country?
