Ron Sylvester, Wichita Eagle, August 15, 2008

U.S. District Judge J. Thomas Marten ruled today against three Hispanic families who had claimed a Catholic school policy discriminated against their children.

Marten said this afternoon the Catholic Diocese of Wichita’s policy requiring students to speak only English while at school did not rise to the level of a “hostile educational environment.”

“If anyone thinks they’re going to walk out of here thinking they won anything, they don’t understand this case or either side of the issues,” [said Marten].

He chastised the families and school and diocese leaders for bringing the case to court, saying both sides could have worked together to find a better solution.
