Community leaders on Monday called on students from poorer parts of Chicago to protest inequalities in school funding by skipping the first day of classes.

“Today we are back to two-tiered schools—white and affluent on one side, and black, brown and poor on the other,” said Meeks, who also is a minister on the city’s South Side. “That’s an injustice and it’s immoral.”
Meeks said he expects several thousand Chicago students to travel in a caravan of buses to New Trier Township High School in the leafy, North Shore suburb of Winnetka, where they will attempt to enroll.
State statistics indicate that the New Trier district spends around $17,000 annually on each of its students compared to the roughly $10,000 a year spent for each student in Chicago public schools.

Officials at New Trier Township High School District 203 said it wasn’t yet clear how they’ll deal with so many Chicago students showing up at one time to attempt to enroll at the high school.

Meeks said the protesters would seek to enroll based on state rules allowing students to transfer to another district if their safety is at risk. The inferior education they receive in Chicago, he said, “was not good for the safety of their futures.”

It is always easier and more fun to complain than to study. Note that these students already had the benefit of Head Start, taxpayer funded day care, medical care, dental care, housing, food stamps, transportation and book allowances, and still, they cannot read or do math.
Note also that schools are not required to learn. Anyone who wanted to learn could simply go to any taxpayer-funded library and start there, or go on-line. In the 18th and 19th Century, many rural American children learned at home by reading — often starting with the Bible.
There is nothing — absolutely nothing standing in the way of learning for these students. Their world is dripping with accessible knowledge, from PBS science shows, to the History Channel, to libraries, to the internet. What is missing is the will and the ability to learn.

The Winnetka parents have real jobs, which is why they can afford high property taxes. (Leave aside for now that all school districts tax excessively.) The slum parents are on welfare or have governemnt jobs (same thing) so the city & state are paying for their kids’ education. But $10,000 should still be enough to get decent schooling, if they really wanted it.

No it is not unjust or immoral because the cause is the destructive pathology of too many blacks themselves : highest violent crime rate (in all categories), highest school discipline rate, highest by far illegitimacy rate, and biggest academic and average IQ gap of all minority groups with respect to Whites and Asians (irregardless of education spending). All this and more along with the natural self-defense tendency of Whites and Asians to live away from such pathology results in actually a more just, moral and productive segregated situation.

So they found a white district that outspends Chicago. The reality is that most white suburban schools spend less than urban black schools. For example, in Ohio suburban residents of Cleveland spend about $11,000 per student with 2/3 of that money coming fron local funds(the parents themselves) while urban schools (Cleveland and black suburbs) spend about $12,000 per student with only 10% coming from local funds! And still they bitch! The white parents are forced to drive an hour a day to work because the great city they built was destroyed by blacks, pay inflated property taxes, subsidize the schools that blacks have destroyed, and then they should feel quilty!

Notice how these black students can get on a bus and go where they aren’t wanted on a pretext which is unsupported - but they can’t pick up a book and learn from it. They can’t do their homework. They can’t shut up and sit still and learn. They can’t refrain from viciously bullying the few among them who do learn.

Notice how blacks always seem to take their inferior educations with them, wherever they go. And if money would make their educations less inferior - it would be the first time that ever happened - the Kansas City desegration case farce being a pointed example.

Trillions of dollars have been spent for the last century trying to get blacks to learn on an acceptable level, all to no avail.
Blacks have to learn that money can’t buy intelligence, good study habits, a desire to learn, intellectual curiosity, and it can’t prevent students with a perverse desire to drop out and turn to crime, because they believe they can make more money doing that, and they are fully aware it is much easier than having to work to earn a living.
If blacks can’t blame someone or something else for their failures, they will be forced to admit they cannot cut it in an advanced society, and their huge egos will not allow them to accept the truth. So, we will be hearing these kinds of demands as long as blacks are in this country or until the government pays them a fortune to stay home and get high.
Let the whining continue. I have my ear muffs on.

Ten grand per student and blacks still graduate functional illiterates. A parochial school spends less than half that, and most of their grads head onward to some form of higher education and that, with ease.
This black reverend apparently knows what no other sane or sober adult person knows, that more money will make young blacks embrace learning. And The Bell Curve strikes again!
Watch this black “reverend” “get paid” in the near future. Like poverty pimps Sharpton, J.Jackson et.al., he’ll cash in soon. Stay tuned, folks.

I am a Chicago boy, born and raised in all places on the South Side of Chicago. Rev Meeks (hah), Jeremiah Wright, the Obamas - all former neighbors.
I am getting a big boot out of this story and think it is great that James Meeks wants to invade the posh North Shore and enroy his people at New Trier. Poor and working class WHites have had to deal with the urban Blacks, busing, school, neighborhood take over, threats for 50 years, it is high time the elite rich folks in the posh Burbs got to experience the joys of Diversity.
Like to get Rev Meeks to do the same for the family retreats of the Bushes, Kennedys, Malibu, Aspen.
Some Amren activists should volunteer to work as bus drivers to get these groups to meet.

When I graduated from high school, my school was ranked thought my four years in the top five.
My old school is now majority black and hispanic. The Buffalo News reported that on some days, the truancy rate is 25%.
No one in the black community ever addresses the issue, ‘you can’t learn if you don’t attend school’. The low achievement and high dropout rates are blamed on 1) not enough money and 2) the need to make the schools more minority friendly (IE. afrocentric studies).

And blacks actually believe that because Obama could make it as president, that this is proof of how far they have come? Hardly! Only reason he made it so far is because he also had a white family, who saw to it he went to school every day, and a white family to finance his edcuation. Don’t these boneheads realize the budget they receive each year is based in part on the total attendence. Staying out of class only serves to diminish their budget. Weak attendance is probably one of the reasons they don’t get as much money to work with as other schools. Weak attendance, is probably why they don’t understand this stuff.

White suburbanites know perfectly well what will happen if they pass; the white safe sane normal schools they nearly bankrupted themselves to buy homes near and which they have spent years of their life to commute to and from the neighborhoods of will be ruined by the very element they sacrificed so much to avoid.

Again, it boils down to low IQ and blacks have low IQ. It doesn’t matter what school blacks go to or how much is spent on schools, blacks will fail because of their low IQ. Some Asian countries spend very little on their education but are very sucessful because they have high IQ. “The Bell Curve” was a groundbreaking book and it will always be relevant because it is true and will always be true.

This is a grand idea! Show the black students the classes while in session. Point out that white kids do not misbehave. They sit at their desks, and read the texbooks, and listen to their instructors. These are their role models. We can bridge the racial gap, one quiet classroom at a time.

Fritz’s comment above is right on target. Attendence makes the final tally when it comes to state cash. High achieving schools have great attendence so they get more money.
Detroit schools are half empty on any school day, but they get well above most suburban schools. They still turn out functional illiterates.

What an excellent idea to improve overall education. Blacks miss the first day of school so why not the final day as well. Goes without saying thay may as well miss all the days inbetween. I doubt if it will make the slightest difference to black education but would do a great deal to facilitate uninterupted White schooling.

New Trier cannot possibly accomodate these students, even if it wanted do, which it surely does not. In addition, students who reside in Chicago aren’t eligible to enroll at NT. What idiots. The problem with Chicago schools is what’s in them.

My kid’s parochial grade school (K-8), just outside of Chicago, gives parents an annual statement on the actual cost to educate its 375 students, which comes to a little over $4,000 per student. Since it’s a Christian school, it receives zero state aid. And yet, the students consistently score much higher on standardized achievement tests than the statewide average. Even our local public school districts spend far less than Meek’s Chicago district. So how can $10,000 per Chicago student “endanger” their well-being?

For many years, in Chicago, the expenditure, per student, has been nearly twice that of the expenditures in White neighborhoods on the Northwest and Southwest side. Yet, the public schools in the White neighborhoods, with larger classes and older buildings, do a better job than the schools in the inner city.
It is the students, themselves, and the homes they come from that matter. Not the buildings, the equipment, or even the student-teacher ratio.

Winnetka is over 96% White. Almost all of those whites are wealthy, educated, married households. The average home is about 1.5 million and the per capita income is around 85,000.
When you do what you’re supposed to and are successful you spend you’re money living with like minded, educated people.
You spend your money on important things, like good housing, good schools etc.
If you bus a bunch of blacks in that will destroy the whole reason for living there. The whites, IE the money, brains and support of the town, will leave.
The blacks will be right where they started.
You can not grant an education and success by fiat.
They have to be earned.
It just shows how stupid blacks are, they are never able to grasp the obvious.
You can enroll all the blacks you want, they will fail just as miserably.
The funny thing is Winnetka as a town is quite liberal in their voting due to White Mans Guilt.
It’s easy to play liberal when your town is over 96% White and no black can afford a home there unless they’re an NBA player.

My school was huge, until recently it was the only one in the city. When I graduated, it was 44% white, 32% Hispanic, 24% Black, 2% other. Since we all went to the same school, same district, and receive the same funding, the Blacks do better here, right?
WRONG.
They have all of the same opportunities, but they still have all the problems of “underfunded” inner city schools: little effort, low grades, low attendance. Minorities dominate regular classes, Whites dominate advanced classes.
Why do Whites always outperform Blacks at the same level of funding? It’s a mystery. [/sarcasm]

VERY WELL SAID. That is the true root of the problem. All the money, special programs, PC ideology, don’t alter the BASIC FACT that if you only have an average I.Q. of 85, you just don’t make the cut. For blacks (and their PC fellow travellers) the implication of this truth is too devastating to accept. Either blacks consistently fail due to White racism, or they fail due to low levels of black intelligence. They must cling fanatically to the former belief.

I am attending a state educators institute this week in the Northwest region, and this article hit home with me.
Today the keynote speaker, the state superintendant, was in self flagellation mode over the > 25% dropout rate for blacks.
After all the peer tutoring, multiple tries at state tests, dumbing down through outcome based education, the blacks, hispancs, and misc. still fail.
Her words were (I paraphrase) “… if we could only understand and appreciate their culture better, people of color would succeed” “We must design more relevant lessons to get them interested in school…” Etc, etc, ..a pity party. I left before I started laughing too loud.

Funny. I remember in HBO’s “The Wire” the fictional school hires truant officers. They’re only focusing on an artificial increase in attendance, though, getting kids to come in once a month for funding purposes. Wonder whether that’s a common pattern :)
I know you guys focus on low levels of intelligence but I don’t think that’s the reason - I think it’s unwillingness to learn. Hell, maybe it ain’t enough for a PHD but if they were actually in school, trying, they’d at least get basic math down.

I have a great idea. The high tech industry is leaving poor little black me behind, so I’ll skip school.
When I was growing up, it was understood that everyone had a job to do. My father had a job as a university professor. My mother had a job as a bank loan officer (now you know where I got my attitude about money), and my sister and I each had a job - our jobs were going to school. I also did most of the yardwork and she took care of the dog. Mowing a lawn is still so ingrained in me that I miss pushing a mower around and smelling fresh-cut grass.
Leaving family expectations aside, I really liked high school. As you might expect, a wealthy university town could afford to hire some good teachers. My chemistry teacher had been badly poisoned during his time in industry, but I think Bruce Bush was the best teach of any subject in my life. He retired only when he was too sick to teach. My German teacher was Inge Sargeant, who wrote “Twilight Over Burma”. Her first husband was Prince of the Shan state, and he was murdered by the army during the coup there.
The last time we spoke was outside of the grocery store in my old neighborhood. She was suprised I didn’t have an arm or a leg in a cast.
Skipping school really means resignation to a night job stocking shelves at Wal Mart for the rest of your life.

I just looked at a friend’s MSTA (Maryland State Teachers Association) pocket calendar for 2008-09. This year, folks, Christmas (according to calendar) is on December 30th.
And people wonder about the product they put out.
