Nigerian immigrants have the highest levels of education in this city and the nation, surpassing whites and Asians, according to Census data bolstered by an analysis of 13 annual Houston-area surveys conducted by Rice University.
Although they make up a tiny portion of the U.S. population, a whopping 17 percent of all Nigerians in this country held master’s degrees while 4 percent had a doctorate, according to the 2006 American Community Survey conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. In addition, 37 percent had bachelor’s degrees.
In comparison
To put those numbers in perspective, 8 percent of the white population in the U.S. had master’s degrees, according to the Census survey. And 1 percent held doctorates. About 19 percent of white residents had bachelor’s degrees. Asians come closer to the Nigerians with 12 percent holding master’s degrees and 3 percent having doctorates.
The Nigerian numbers are “strikingly high,” said Roderick Harrison, demographer at the Joint Center for Political and Economic Studies, a Washington, D.C., think tank that specializes in researching black issues. “There is no doubt that these are highly educated professionals who are probably working in the petrochemical, medical and business sectors in Houston.”
{snip}
Staying in school
The reasons Nigerians have more post-graduate degrees than any other racial or ethnic group are largely due to Nigerian society’s emphasis on mandatory and free education. Once immigrating to this country, practical matters of immigration laws get in the way.
The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 made it easier for Africans to enter the U.S., but mostly as students or highly skilled professionals—not through family sponsorships, Klineberg said.
So many Africans pursue higher levels of education as an unintended consequence of navigating the tricky minefield of immigration, said Amadu Jacky Kaba, an associate professor at Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J., who has done research on African immigrants in the U.S.
{snip}
But not all Africans have to go this route. Some say their motivation is driven by their desire to overcome being a double minority: black and African.
Take Oluyinka Olutoye, 41, associate professor of pediatric surgery at Baylor College of Medicine. He came to this country already as a medical doctor but decided to pursue his doctorate in anatomy to help set himself apart.
“Being black, you are already at a disadvantage,” said Olutoye, whose wife, Toyin Olutoye, is an anesthesiologist at Baylor. “You really need to excel far above if you want to be considered for anything in this country.”
Family expectations
All this talk of education creates high expectations for children of Nigerian immigrants. The eldest child of David Olowokere, chairman of the engineering technologies department at Texas Southern University, for example, is already working on her master’s degree in public health in Atlanta; the middle child is pursuing a bachelor’s in pre-medicine. His youngest, a son, attends The Woodlands High School. He already has aspirations to go into engineering, just like his parents, Olowokere beams.

But without affirmative action admissions and grading, they would be the same as any other black. Here are the average I.Q. scores for several of the nations in Africa per Lynn’s I.Q. and Wealth of Nations. Any leftist reporter that thinks he’s pointing out black genius is a bit below average himself. I’m willing to bet that 98% of all Nigerians who hold a degree reads and performs math on a high school level, the same as any average AA black in the US.

So go back to Nigeria! What’s so difficult about this? You weren’t brought here against your will.
He and his wife — both highly paid professionals — are obviously doing quite well in this country and are enjoying an excellent standard of living.
Immigrants who come here to take advantage of our nation’s opportunities and then whine about racist phantoms should GET OUT.

Nigeria is one of the most corrupt nations on earth and if they arrive with degrees from Nigeria those degrees aren’t worth the paper they are printed on. If they got their degrees here it was due to money being exchanged under the table. If these people are so intelligent it fails to explain why is Nigeria a primitive, superstitious, barbaric and backward third-world country…
Posted by at 6:18 PM on May 20
Then why isn’t Nigeria, with a lot of natural resources, and a population now greater than Germany, so prosperous?
Perhaps the reason for the main question in this article is that Nigerian arrivals are a self-selecting sample and thus are more intelligent on average than the average Nigerian. Add to it affirmative action in education, and the result is obvious. Of the various Nigerian ethnic groups, the Ibo seem to be the most ambitious of all, so I bet most of these are Ibo.
BTW, my first-semester calculus teacher in high school was born in Nigeria, and is Ibo.

As a teacher I know and state: any Africans get their degrees only in the USA and only on the basis of the affirmative action and only in such sleazy fields that require no knowledge, like public relations, African literarure, racial diversity, and so so, so on, so on…

Here is another support of my above statement. It is an excerpt from the following article: For the record, Joseph C. Hall, a chemistry professor at president of the Faculty Senate, said that DeLoatch(the dean)“encouraged” professors to pass at least 70 percent of students in each course, regardless of performance.

What this article tells us is what all of us already know and that is that leftist rags and their butt-kissing PC reporters will go to any lengths to try to fool its readers into believing something that isn’t so, so long as they believe it advances their perverted beliefs or their agendas. Truly disgusting.
True justice would be putting their lives in the hands of some black incompetents, by whatever quirk of fate, relying on their ability to save them.

Amen! They should make all those “educated” degree-holding Nigerians take the SAT to confirm their intellectual skills. That would be good for a laugh - how much do you want to bet most of them are semi-literate at best?

Where did these africans get their degrees? Most if not all of them are non-productive workers. Nigeria is a shameful filthy nation that is a discrace to the human race. Why are these foreign racist Nigerians permitted to live in the USA? I didn’t let them in and feel they are imperialists and racial genocidal racist africans! They can go home.

Be Careful Here. This is the same country that is ranked at the very top of the worlds Most Corrupt States list. You can buy a degree from any Nigerian University for a $100. This is the country where the cops rent out their guns to the criminals to use at night while they are off duty. This is the country where 40% of the oil produced just goes missing.

How does comparing Nigerians to “whites” tell one anything? Nigerian is a nationality, “white” is a racial group - and one that has non-whites, partial whites and what have you lumped into it with no definable standard whatever. Thus, this is nothing more than so much useless, if pernicious number manipulation from the get-go.

I know that the PC media has been distorting things for a while but some of the stuff I have been seeing coming from them lately is really depressing me. What is with all these stories lately that are making these bottom of the rung immigrants into people they never could be? First it was the article about Hawking swearing that there are Einsteins in Africa, and then the article talking about how SE Asian immigrants are currently assimilating better than white immigrants ever did economically, and now we have this article here. As I said before…I know that the media has always falsely reported on racial issues, but what I am seeing recently is flat out disturbing. We are approaching the tip of the iceburg in this country. I have had enough. It depresses me thinking about all the whites who actually believe this stuff.

We only get the top students from Africa. The African students at my school are among the most motivated, mainly to avoid any chance of being forced to return to their declining and violent home countries. There has been a mass exodus of Africa’s intelligencia to the United States and Europe. Because of this, Africa will even more resemble Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness this century.

I have to laugh when I hear these blacks, who are doing better than most whites, whine that they are at a disadvantage. If that’s true, than why are they here, shouldn’t they be going back to Nigeria? I’ll also add that these Nigerians are the cream of the crop, so to speak, they’re not average by any matter of means.

Considering the historic achievements of Africans and African-Americans, it’s easy to be skeptical of this article.
How is it that, while blacks have historically failed to achieve educational prominence in African schools and American schools, suddenly we have this explosion of African talent that surpasses white, native born individuals?
Recently, I was watching Washington Journal on c-span and an hispanic educator was talking about the success rate of blacks and hispanics at her school. Although I can’t recall the exact numbers, the graduation rates and college acceptance rates where far higher than would be expected. As with this article, this school seemed like an aberration.
Then the women went on to explain that all the black and hispanic children who attended this school were hand picked on such things as high academic performance and high degrees of motivation. They were the best of the best and they were picked because they exhibited the drive to succeed.
I can’t speak specifically as to why this group has achieved as much as they have but I would speculate that it’s likely they were culled from the top of their class. The fact that such a high percentage have reached this level of academic success points, at least to me, that some selection process is at work.
Now that they’ve achieved this success, I wish they would go back to their homeland where they can help people like themselves. However, I don’t believe this is possible because, as I and others have said, it’s likely these are the cream of the crop and in no way reflect the abilities of the average African. If they returned to Africa, their talents would simply be overwhelmed by a much larger majority that could never reach such levels of achievement.
The fact that there are exceptions to a general rule does not invalidate the general rule; especially if the exceptions are carefully selected and groomed.

There is no denying that some Africans with varying qualification are getting educated and receiving advanced degrees. Some of these degrees are from substandard African universities and some are affirmative action degrees from American universities.
Unfortunately, there are separate Intelligence (I.Q.) Bell Curves for African and white populations, and while these IQ curves overlap at the extremes, they are basically separate intelligence populations, with the black population IQ significantly below the white IQ.
Patients who assume that equal advanced degrees, such as an M.D. degree, among blacks and whites means equal competence are mistaken, and they are gambling with their lives. Black physician’s incompetence will always show itself, and the medical staffs and hospital administrations will rush to their defense for fear of being labeled “racist”, of for the loss of revenue that removing the incompetents would cause, or for personal (read “liberal”) reasons.
The patients of black physicians will be the ones who eventually pay the ultimate price: if one thinks that black doctors are “almost” as good a white doctors, but actually black doctor’s patients have a mortality rate that is just 1% higher than their white physician colleagues, that means that of every 1000 patients, there will be 10 more deaths among the black physician’s patients. That is a gamble I am unwilling to take, and others should not take it either.

Nigerian professionals in the US (doctors, engineers, lawyers, pharmacists, etc.) still have to pass the same licensing exams that everyone else takes. I guess the exams must be giving the Nigerians an easy pass.
Mr. Dennis Kozlowski was a white collar crookish CEO at Tyco. At a particular time, $30 billion was awarded for the reconstruction of Iraq, and $8 billion dollars vanished. I guess the Nigerians stole that too. That’s my tax dollars and yours. I also bet the Nigerians were the Enron boys as well right? My point is that there are bad eggs in every pile.
That Nigerians have more degrees is really inconsequential. It shouldn’t threaten the fabric of anyone’s existence. Or does it fly in the face of your assumption that blacks are morons? If you are as brilliant as Bill Gates or Steve Jobs, you can make a name for yourself without a degree instead of being an armchair analyst waiting for the most horrendous news about blacks to re-affirm your bigotry or find every possible way to denigrate any form of black progress, picking on every fault possible. You see Dr. Benjamin Carson and you go, “yeah, he passed his exams via affirmative action, he passed his neurosurgical licensing exams because he was simply black” and whatever illogical statements that emanate from your brains. Goodness gracious!

They are filling the quotas with black Nigerians. Because the blacks that are here are not doing so well inspite of all the programs that are trying to place them into professional positions.
This Nigerian education/immigration is also a US government funded social program as well.
After they come here they need not pay for any further education. And they get prestigious jobs in academia and as teachers that takes jobs away from white Americans.

A Nigerian post-graduate degree isn’t worth the amimal hide it’s written on. I work with a Nigerian who earned a masters degree in meteorology at home, but for some reason(?) couldn’t cut it as a meteorologist in the States. Thanks to affirmative action, he ended up in my IT department, but has no ability to grasp technical subject matter whatsoever. Management actually has him emptying trash on the night shift to justify keeping the guy around.
I would suspect that any above average 8th grader from the states is bright enough to “earn” a post-grad degree in Nigeria.

You didn’t account for the possibility that patients that visit black doctors are more likely to have been at a later stage of a medical ailment than the patients that visit white doctors. This is a fact.
Furthermore, the difference you mentioned is only reasonable if the patients that visit both categories of doctors are alike with inconsequential differences. You must also provide evidence that both categories of physicians work under similar environments and with similar resources. In essence you must eliminate external factors thus reducing the sample space to internal factors. Furthermore, evidence for an internal factor isn’t evidence of baseline intellectual differences.
Without these, your causal argument is fallacious. The philosophic standards of making cogent causal claims are quite rigorous since causation is unprovable.
Be prepared to show your work. I await a reasonable analysis. I’m open-minded.

Board Exams are very political and many hospitals want foreign MDs who will work cheaper. Anyway, most foreign nations medical schools are four years total, no pre-med. I have known many Eastern European MDs, even worked with them in Europe, they like those of the entire British system go to school for four years. They don’t have to be present in class, they simply must pass tests. IF too many fail, it reflects on the teacher. I don’t know how the health professions are holding together. But the fact is that the U.S. still has the best medical schools in the world.

What an excellent point! This country is so generous to non-whites, and especially blacks.
Let’s imagine for a moment living in a U.S.A. where, because you are born WHITE, everyone excuses your failings; as a youngster you are given all sorts of perks such as tutors, midnight basketball, scholarships, etc.; then as an adult you receive business grants, affirmative action hiring, government jobs, easy promotions; the newspapers adore you and work overtime to protect your honor; your race is portrayed positively in films and TV commercials; you are raised to think you’re fabulous; your sulky and belligerent attitude is congratulated and considered perfectly justified; corporations long to hire you; corporations are loathe to fire you; organizations come to your defense simply because you are WHITE, etc., etc.! Have you envisioned this white affirmative action paradise yet? What a country! What an existence!
Now back to reality. You are born white. No organizations care about you. You are on your own. You should hang your head in shame for the sins of your ancestors and for your “white privilege.” You are being phased out and replaced in your own country. Non-whites are being imported by the millions. Enjoy and “celebrate” the diverse good times!

Does anyone really believe that Nigerians in fact have a nebulous form of non testable mental superiority? Seriously folks this is a puff piece.
Or take it seriously and you would have to arrive at the conclusion that whites are just not performing at their capacity or ability. This conclusion also would not suprise me very much at all.

RESPONSE:
It is interesting that even blacks delay going to black doctors as long as possible, until their illness becomes advanced.
Your points about comparing black and white doctor’s outcomes are correct, but unrealistic. In a world where one cannot even suggest that a difference exists between black and white intelligence, a study in which several variables are controlled is culturally impossible. Blacks become upset at the mere suggestion that there is a racial difference in the genetic causes of hypertension, heart disease, prostate cancer between blacks and whites. Now you want to suggest a study of black doctor’s skill and intelligence vs. that of white doctors. I don’t think it can ever happen in this time and place.
The variables you want to control may become less important as the size of the two population study groups becomes larger, therefore death rates of all patients of black doctors vs. the death rates among patients of white doctors would be very instructive. Don’t look for such a study anytime soon because the blacks and liberal media will not allow even that type of discussion, much less a statistical comparison.
So, one is left with a reasoned, common sense approach to their own health care. I really do not care where you get your care, but as for me and my family, it will be solely from well-trained white doctors. I would walk out of a referral to any doctor who I discovered is a black doctor and look elsewhere.

This very well could be true with the current population of Nigerian immigrants most of whom were originally from high IQ upper class/upper middle class families. It actually proves the rule that those born with intelligence will usually succeed regardless of race.
The problem with this for Nigeria is that most of their brightest immigrate here when given an opportunity. That is why they are experiencing a brain drain currently.
There is nothing significantly halting to AMREN’s positions on race here at all. It is actually a representation of AMREN’s position on IQ and life achievement within the confines of genetics and environmental influences.

That’s fine. But until this kind of study is done while controlling for confounding factors, we can’t really speak about meaningful differences in physician competence with respect to races. Not too along ago, a white Long Island physician Dr. Harvey Finkelstein did something as silly as re-use syringes when they should’ve have been disposed of, and more so without autoclave sterilizing. http://www.newsday.com/news/local/nassau/ny-liijec1125,0,7254964.story
If you aren’t comfortable with a physician that isn’t white, that’s fine. A patient’s comfort is more important anyways.

Certifying a black to be a doctor should be investigated and if found to be fraudulent should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. I can’t believe anybody would even need any such study to verify black inability. They apparently qualify as doctors in Africa, but I’ll leave those like you to wonder about whether you should have one treat you or not.
Their infrasture is crumbling, they have no qualified engineers or people in the sciences, but for some reason some on here, now and then, seem to believe that a studied comparison should be made to determine if they are on a par with white doctors.
Really bizarre.

Nobody “assumes” black are morons. Hard evidence, life experience, thousands of tests, and black failure all over the world tell us that.
Nothing you try to falsify will change any of that nor will it fool anybody here.
As a black, what you should be doing is trying to encourage blacks to work harder to at least achive low levels, instead of trying to fool somebody here into believing blacks really aren’t in last place of all the races of the earth, because you’re wasting your time.
