Angry Chicago Latino parents threatened Tuesday to keep their kids home on test day next month if state education officials insist on giving students who are still learning English an achievement test in English.

Facing threats of federal sanctions, state officials were ordered last October to give the same state tests native English speakers take to some 60,000 Illinois public school kids who haven’t yet mastered English.

During a news conference Tuesday at the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, about two dozen Latino parents charged that the test mandate is “unfair,” “anti-immigrant” and “anti-bilingual education.”

They were joined by State Sen. Iris Martinez (D-Chicago), who said the federal government was “trying to take this program [bilingual education] away from us” by forcing children to take a test in English before they are fluent.

{snip}

Previously, Illinois kids in bilingual education programs for less than three years took an alternative state test in English.

But last October federal education officials ruled that test did not meet federal No Child Left Behind standards. They ordered Illinois bilingual education students who have been in public schools for more than a year to take the same tests native English speakers take, starting March 3.

{snip}

Barrera’s daughter, Arely, said she did poorly on practice tests, and is worried she’ll tank the real thing.

“I’m scared,” said Arely, age 9. “I think I’m going to fail. I’m not prepared to do the test.”

State education officials have crafted a long list of test accommodations, including more time, having proctors read directions aloud in students’ native language, and allowing proctors to transcribe student answers in English to questions that require written responses.

{snip}

Officials from Chicago Public Schools, Cicero District 99 and Schaumburg District 54 sent an angry letter to state education officials late Monday, demanding, at a minimum, that kids who are still learning English be allowed to answer written questions in their native language.

The new test mandate, according to the letter, is “patently unfair and damaging to students, teachers and schools. It puts administrative interests ahead of the needs of children and that is bureaucracy at its worst.”

Vote for McCain.

I hate to say it. I myself said I never would. There is a single reason why, and most of you who have been in our struggle over the past decade will understand.

Finally, towns, cities, counties and even entire states are making progress at halting illegal immigration - without help, as we know, from our federal government. The awaking of the American people to the problem of illegals and the action taken to stop the nefarious effects of that immigration are finally coming to fruition.

The one thing that can stop all of these efforts and kill them in their infancy are the courts.

We must have the Supreme Court; and voting McCain over Hillary or Barak is the only way to have a chance at controlling the selection of the next two nominees.

I know McCain has not been an ally in this struggle or even in Bush’s court selections. However, I believe that the Republican base understands the selection process now and, just as we ousted Harriet Myers, we will ensure that McCain’s selections will be Constitutionalists.

If the efforts of our allies in the states that are passing legislation against illegals are ruled unconstitutional, our cause will be lost.

We must keep the Supreme Court at this critical juncture. We cannot afford to have two more Ruth Bader Ginsbergs ruling against the lawful efforts of our courageous fellow citizens.

I ask you all to suck it up one more time. We can still win this battle for our country, even if the President is not with us, but right now we must have the Supreme Court on our side.

Oh yes, don’t you dare test my child in the official language of this country!

Sometimes it gets downright ridiculous.

Posted by Justin at 6:36 PM on February 15

If you can`t figure out how to conceptualize or don`t have a knack for critical thinking skills, having the question translated into a language you understand isn`t going to help any. I can`t explain aerodynamics or quantem physics well even when I understand the question asking me to. The apologists will need more work on this one soon!(apparently I can`t even spell quantem either…)

Latino parents threatened to keep their kids home on test day. Go ahead and keep your kids home, it’s not like the are stellar academic performers any way.

They should go to Mexico with their parents and take a Mexican standardized achievement test. And stay in Mexico.

Speaking as a Canadian, who has to deal with English and French as the ‘two official languages’, Americans have to nip this bilingual trend in the bud.

Once it becomes entrenched in culture and law, there are no end of unforeseen negative consequences. It’s also very costly. Stand up English as the one national language, or reap the consequences of inaction.

Posted by at 7:44 PM on February 15

Of course it’s anti-bilingual, this is the first thing school officials should admit to the parents without any equivocation. We don’t want two languages in this nation. We want English. Press 1 or 2 for English.

Posted by Bobby at 7:45 PM on February 15

How dare those gringos make the good Latino students of Chicago take tests in English. After all, we all know that the Americans stole Illinois from Mexico in the Mexican-American War of 1848. (???)

Posted by St. Louis CofCC Blogmeister at 7:49 PM on February 15

This is the reason why real life bears out the IQ tests. Asian parents push their kids to learn English and do better than whites. Latino parents protest that their kids are being forced to study more English!!! Which group do you think is smarter and will succeed in this country?

The extra accommodations are discriminatory against ll other students who do nto get extra help.
Hispanics should learn English or go home now.
My family moved to other countries when I was a child and I got Exactly NO ACCOMMODATION or help to learn the language. Always in less than 3 month I could do as well as the native students since I had heard NOTHING but the local language in school and the community.
I qualify for the Hispanic designation but my opinion is that the complaining Hispanics are too LAZY or too accommodated to learn the English language.
There are many studies which show that forced immersion works.
End the accommodation and end the affirmative action status too.
Try moving to Mexico and see how unaccommodating and discriminatory the govenment and people are EVEN after someone becomes a citizen there are still many restrictions.

Testing Hispanic kids’ English proficiency “unfair” and “anti-bilingual.”

But imposing Spanish language on Americans is “fair” and not “anti-American”, huh? What a hypocrisy.

None of this would be a problem IF the US would clarify it’s laws ensuring that “Anchor Babies” are no longer such but citizens of the country their illegal alien mothers came from.

If they don’t speak english what’s the point of testing them?
Now my point is our ancestors came from a multitude of countries and had to know english on the fly and in a hurry what’s up with these educators not being able to teach english in a year? I think bi-lingual education is a disservice to these children.

“bilingual education students”

Isn’t racial division already enough? Multi-racial, multi-lingual, what has happen to the togetherness which a society should be all about? People who do not just look and think differenly but which also can not communicate with each other are surely no way to archive social stability!

I wish I could remember where I read it, but one foreign-language book that I once read had this classic quip: “If a stupid three year old kid can speak Spanish, so can you.”

That said, for those with a need should check out The Quick And Dirty Guide To Learning Languages Fast by A.G Hawke.

Mexican schools are teaching English. We have to deal with the worthless that Mexico doesn’t want.

The welfare offices have spoiled the illegals by providing bilingual services and encourage them to demand more from the system.

While living in Germany, my children went to school an hour early each day for German language classes, and then finished the day with the other children. To this day, they are all quite fluent in German. I bless the wonderful German people for making that opportunity available for my kids. Of course, learning German raises your IQ.

The problem is that America is a land of stunning inconsistencies and hypocrisy when it comes to “immigrants” and “bi-ligualism.” These people may be un-educated, even illiterate in their own language…but they aren’t completely stupid either. They know in many ways America is and has been bending over backward to accomodate them! I can no longer buy a product at the supermarket without it also having Spanish-language directions, etc. Voting info, hospital care, various legal documents, and what have you are obligingly provided for these invaders with official glee. So why would anyone be surprised that they fully do believe America IS A BI-LINGUAL country? What America really is and what any of us here want it to be, or even once knew it to be are two entirely different beasts.

Posted by HH at 3:28 AM on February 16

In and of itself, some of that may be legitimate in that they won’t score as high if they aren’t fluent in English, but this just shows the problems that come from not teaching them to speak English as soon as possible. And the problems that come from letting so many of them in in the first place.

I’m a Spanish teacher and couldn’t agree with you more. I must stay within the bounds of PC in order to retain my job for a few more years until I can retire but when questioned by my students about the importance of Spanish in America today, my standard response is that learning a FOREIGN ( I always stress the word) language is part of a rounded education but Spanish, as well as any of the other offerings of the FOREIGN Language department, are and should remain FOREIGN. I refuse to use the new term “World Languages”
There are several students in my classes from various Spanish speaking countries who are there for the easy A instead of being in a French, German or Latin class. They tend to be disruptive not in a violent sense but by calling out in class and challenging certain things that I say with statements like “That’s not the way WE say it in my country.” I constantly admonish them that Spanish is a the language of 19 countries and therefore one should expect variances in the ways of expressing certain ideas and in the nomenclature for certain things, especially foods and clothing. I try as much as possible to turn these situations into learning opportunities for the majority of the class (i.e. the American kids) but my tongue is sore from biting it when I hear ” In my country etc., etc.” It’s all I can do to restrain myself from advising them that maybe they and their families would be happier back in “My country”. That, of course. would spell the end of my long and successful teaching career.
I can sense the growing annoyance on the part of the other students as well.

Every time I see an hispanic representive in a national debate, they insist that these kids and their parents want to learn english.

It’s funny how in reality, I only ever see hispanic parents demanding their children be taught and tested in spanish.

Ah America, Land of Craziness where words means the op-
posite of what they’re supposed to. Bilingual, instead of
meaning being able to speak two languages, means speaking one
language-as long as it’s not English. It is a code. Just like
in many Catholic convents where the Sisters are actually Wic-
cans, but still use all the Catholic Terminology. They just
mean different things. God the Father becomes the Universe.
The Virgin Mary, the Earth and so on. Confucius was right: the
first step in saving a culture is the “rectification of names.”

That’s the problem. English is not this country’s official language, and that’s the problem.

Posted by Tironius at 11:25 PM on February 15

I don’t thinks so. The problem here is the U.S. government that tolerates, and even sponsors, mass and mostly illegal immigration of unassimilating aliens, most of whom speak one language: Spanish.

Making English official would certainly help a bit, and I am all for it, but don’t expect miracles after it’s done. Acording to California Constitution, English is the official langauage in that state yet bi-lingual education and other forms of pollution with Spanish are about as well and kicking there as anywhere else in the U.S.

The problem is that all (well, many) good men do nothing about this. If every one who believes that English is the language that spans us all together showed his disapproval of proliferation of Spanish at every opportunity to do so, we would not have this problem now.

So, when you are in a public place and you hear people loudly speaking in the market version of Spanish, tell them to shut up. When someone greets you in Spanish, or if your favorite store posts shopping info in Spanish, tell them that you are irritated with that and will go elsewhere if it continues (and then follow on your promise). If someone speaks Spanish at a meeting or in classroom, stand up and call it what it is: a rude, if not boorish, behavior (because those who don’t know the language have no way of knowing if they are being offended or laughed at).

The bottom line is that Mexican settlers will go as far as we let them to. Since the federal government doesn’t have any intention to defend us against bi-lingualism, we must do the job that our elected officials are not willing to.

Posted by A Reader at 12:07 PM on February 16

Despite what many think, we do not have an official language. If we did, we would not see this kind of situation.

Notice the creeping Spanish language labeling on products such as Puffs, Pinesol, Saltines, etc. Some of the print on the label is very small NOW, but wait until later… Will we be looking at smaller and smaller point sizes for English language labels in months and years to come?

Posted by at 1:45 PM on February 16

I began studying Spanish in the 4th grade (similar to these “Latinos” being exposedto English, only perhaps they began in kindergarden.) In aptitude tests given in high school, I tested in the 98% percentile in that 2nd language, higher than in English. Learning a 2nd language, studying its grammar, etc., usually helps the person with their own language. It doesn’t mean they cannot perform in the 2nd language. Who needs these people? Why are they here?

“…what’s up with these educators not being able to teach English in a year? I think bi-lingual education is a disservice to these children…”

Posted by pat at 9:54 PM on February 15

Pat, I taught ESL I for many years before my present position. Believe me, the educators are not the problem (although I admit some are, the worst ones being in administration).

In many cases, the students (I taught high school-aged students at the time) were NOT literate in their own language which presented HUGE problems and was a tremendous disadvantage when I was trying to teach them English. A lot of them (at ages 15-18) had never sat in a classroom before, had never opened a book before, had never held a pencil before.

Most of them then (as now) come from peasant cultures where education is neither understood nor appreciated. Attending school was not a big deal—they skipped school if it rained, if they were needed to babysit, it if was ‘Mother’s Day’ (the day the welfare check arrived, that’s the day to go shopping, of course), if they were needed to help their male relatives on a large tree-cutting job or any other lame reason they could come up with.

Many many of my ‘students’ were taking ESL I for the third or fourth time and couldn’t seem to pass out of a rudimentary level. Finally at 18, they are exited from the system, if they lasted that long.

And of course, they (and the local MSM, the politicians, the public) blame the teachers and the schools for not ‘educating’ them. Blame is never, ever NOT EVER placed where it should be: lazy, uncaring students and their illiterate, anti-education culture (I would add low IQs to the mix as well).

Un-Godly amounts of money are shoveled into these programs to this day—taking money away from your child’s general education. All of that money has produced little to no results; the drop-out rate still hovers around 60% for Hispanics after decades of special, costly programs aimed specifically at them.

Please do not judge us teachers until you have so-called ‘walked in our shoes’—most of us are hard-working and dedicated, toiling away in a stifling, intractable bureaucracy, blamed for our students’ poor performances, low test scores, failures, high drop out rate, etc.— when MY experience has been that the entire government-monopoly educational system has twisted itself into knots, throwing money at and accommodating the lowest non-White/Asian students.

Is it any wonder teachers have the highest attrition rate of any profession—approximately 50% leave after five years (I’ve read as low as three years).

The only solution is to seal the border, expel the invaders, end the citizenship birth-right, quit handing out generous government welfare— stop the insanity, including mandatory education.

Why don’t these FREE LOADING INVADERS go back to their own country and tell their own government what to do and how to do it? I can tell you why. Because if they tried to pull the stuff us spineless Americans let them get away with here in their own country their own government would do what we should do to them. And it’s not too pleasant.

From a previous post: Notice the creeping Spanish language labeling on products such as Puffs, Pinesol, Saltines, etc.

Yes, I have noticed. In fact, I didn’t buy the particular boxed cake mix last week that I wanted. I bought one that had English instructions that were big enough for me to read and retained the high altitude instructions. I am also noticing that some cleaning products now have room for other languages but not ‘active ingredients’.

That’s probably because most teachers are women who have babies and many have a white husband taking care of them, although, affirmative action opportunities available to them might have something to do with it as well.

I recently purchased a framing nail gun and then went to a local Home Depot to purchase a box of nails. All of the boxes on the shelf were placed with Spanish facing forward. There really is a very sane, very reasonable answer to these protests by Latino parents…

If Latinos feel that having to live according to American standards, having to speak and COMPREHEND English is unreasonable… they are welcome to move back to Mexico… where they belong!

If the Latinos don’t want to leave… ROUND THEM UP AND FORCE THEM BACK OVER THE BORDER! A loaded military rifle held by a soldier is a fine inducement! We can use state National Guard Units working hand-in-hand with local, state and federal police forces to do the job. Any questions?

GWS: “Vote for McCain.”

You’re joking, I hope. McCain was working shoulder to shoulder with Ted Kennedy for the illegal alien amnesty last summer. He now claims he first wants to “secure the border” (and *then* give illegal aliens amnesty). But that’s just pablum for people who don’t bother to learn anything about the candidates before they vote for them. A week after he’s sworn in he’ll declare the border secured and immediately push for illegal alien amnesty. McCain will be even worse on illegal immigration than Jorge Bush. He will also get us into an entirely unnecessary war with Iran. (When was the last time an Iranian did anything to you?)

Clinton and Obama also both favor illegal alien amnesty. So as usual, we have no choice at all in this election. Believe me, that’s not an accident. Our puppet masters know how to slant the election coverage to ensure that this is so.

The only thing for an honorable man to do is to write in Ron Paul in the general election. And if you’re in a state that hasn’t had its primary yet, vote for Ron Paul. He’s still in the race, although you’d never know it from watching TV, and of course it would take a miracle for him to win at this point.

I am a former USSR immigrant. I used to speak 2 languages - Russian and Ukrainian. I live here for almost 14 years. Tried to speak English day one. Brought 2 dictionaries with me. 3 months before I came to the US I spent every free hour I had self-teaching myself English. Can’t they. Pisses me of big time. This country was built by English speaking people and is should remain the same. If you do not speak American, go back where you came from. We won’t miss you at all.

My son came to lice with me from Ukraine almost a year ago. He already speaks English. Not great, but he is the best in the class of ESOL (English as Second Language). I do not allow Russian or Ukrainian TV channels in my house so all we watch and talk about is American programs and movies. Why can’t those bastards do the same? Why? Build the wall and put machine guns where there were not enough fences.

Hey, here’s another Houston news item — a little tidbit speaking eloquently about Mexican “family values.”

>>>HOUSTON — The baby dumped in a trash can immediately after it was born died early Wednesday morning.

HCSO

Genny Granados
Baby Boy Granados died at Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital. The Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office said an autopsy will be performed sometime Wednesday.

The baby’s mother, 29-year-old Genny Granados, faces charges of injury to a child. She’s in jail, and her bond was recently raised to $50,000.

Don’t warm stories like this make you feel so good and great about those millions of wonderful Mexicans and other Hispanics pouring into our country. This tale made the news… question is HOW MANY other sordid stories about what Hispanics are REALLY like, get passed over by the media — our BIASED media interested in pandering to Blacks and Latinos and doing their best to avoid the truth, should truth be detrimental to the best interests, collectively, of Blacks and Latinos.

If we, (the United States) are supposed to be “one Nation, indivisible” why on earth do we want to divide ourselves with two languages? Can ANYONE provide a rationale for that utter piece of stupidity and bureaucratic bungling?

What these dull witted Mexicans can’t grasp is that by living in our country like an insufferable cancer, they are actually destroying our American culture, traditions, even our Nation — by their trying to become a nation of foreigners WITHIN our Nation.

In other words… “We Mexicans don’t really want to be part of America… but just keep the handouts, the welfare payments coming!”

“…The teachers I have known have been Democrats, pro-Affirmative action, diversity, etc. I think you’re just reaping your own harvest…”

Not True.

I’ve been entrenched (in the trenches) in the educational system for over two decades.

There are MANY MANY teachers out there who toe the party line only because their job requires it—sort of like working in Hollywood—but support Libertarian, Ron Paul-type politics (behind closed doors, of course, and lately, more openly). Many of us believe the unions are standing in the way of true reform (as Peter Brimlowe explains in The Worm in the Apple).

The work atmosphere is truly stifling and Marxist—one reason, I believe for the high attrition rate—not because so many of us have ‘a White husband at home to support us’ (I know of no one in that position and if one lives in a high tax state, it is imperative that both partners work as we must support the welfare leeches who receive benefits that cost ME thousands of dollars, such are free child care, housing subsidies, free medical care, etc..).

I know of not one White teacher that supports Affirmative Action—my experience has been that White teachers are decidedly against it as WE have been the victims of it, i.e. denied transfers to better schools, denied administrative positions over lesser-qualified blacks, denied choice teaching assignments, denied out-of-classroom cushy positions, denied so-called coordinatorships that pay extra money, because we are White and THIS INCLUDES WHITE FEMALES. I know many White teachers who have quit when they’ve been passed over and boxed in by AA—bitter and angry; they are not democrats after this type of experience.

I’ve always believed that the quickest way to cure a young egalitarian Marxist, fresh from a Che-worshipping ed school, full of Communist slogans and clap-trap, is let him teach in an inner-city school for a few months. The Teach for America types are the absolute worst—and are usually gone by Christmas at the latest, also bitter and angry at having their Marxist bubble burst by reality.

I witnessed one drop his keys on the front desk in the office, walk to his car and drive off, never to be seen again—and this was before lunch.

As I have posted before: The government-monopoly school system is NOT about education, it is about making work for non-Whites and social engineering (where else are all those black Ph.D.s going to go?).

This is why I often post, get your kids out of the government-monopoly schools, do it now, and don’t look back.

PS: There are now some wonderful on-line K-12 fully-accredited schools to help with home schooling. I am in a home schooling coalition that doubled its numbers from Sept. to Oct. and doubled again in Jan. and is looking to double again in a few months. We parents, and teachers, have had enough of diversity, false multi-culturalism and racism directed at us.
