The bloodiest city in the country in 2006, reeling from crime in its struggle to recover from Hurricane Katrina, got even worse in 2007.
New Orleans registered 209 homicides last year, a nearly 30 percent increase from the 161 recorded in 2006.
The FBI’s rankings for 2007 will not be out until much later in the year, but New Orleans’ population is thought to be 295,450, which would mean a rate of about 71 homicides per 100,000 people.
Even the most generous population estimate in 2006 put the number of people in the city that year at 255,000.
That meant a real homicide rate of 63.5 per 100,000 residents in New Orleans. To compare that number with some other notoriously bloody cities, the rate for Gary, Ind., was 48.3 and Detroit’s was 47.1.
The killings are drug-related or retaliatory for the most part, police have said. The upswing comes despite continued patrols by the National Guard and state police and the addition of two new classes of police recruits in the past year.

There are hopeful signs, however, Goyeneche [Rafael Goyeneche, executive director of the Metropolitan Crime Commission of Greater New Orleans] said, pointing to improved schools in the city since the 2005 storm, grass-roots efforts to tackle crime, and a growing effort to upgrade city life.
“This city is beginning to do some things that I’ve been waiting 25 years to see,” Goyeneche said. “I think there is a renewed sense of purpose; people are focused and demanding more than what was in play before Katrina hit.”

I hope the white city council can reverse decades horrible black leadership. I would visit New Orleans with lighter heart when it is a majority white and asian city.

The AP version of this story states that:
The killings are drug-related or retaliatory for the most part, police have said. The upswing comes despite continued patrols by the National Guard and state police and the addition of two new classes of police recruits in the past year.
The National Guard is there, and that hasn’t made anything better. Looks like we can throw Martial Law as a means to stop black violence out the window.

Oh good, at least they’ll have a smarter bunch of dead people.

That is absolutely wonderful news. Many might see this as a problem. But they don’t realize that New Orleans is basically a cage to house the very worst of human depravity. When, that cage was destroyed, that element was spread throughout the US. People who went to great pains to segregate themselves from this evil, suddenly found it bussed in next door to them. Now that the cage is rebuilt, it’s time to gather up the animals and put them back in. Luckily, like most animals kept in cages, if you simply leave the door open, with a full food dish, they eventually find their way back inside with little or no effort on their keepers’ part.

Shortly after Hurricane Katrina, when the rebuilding of New Orleans began and Ray Nagin declared that the city would become a chocolate city, the orderlies at the city morgue started calling the morgue the “candy factory” and dubbed the corpses in storage their “boxes of chocolates.”

I always find it disingenuous how reporters always refer to the Big Easy as “recovering from Hurricaine Katrina” as if New Orleans hasn’t been in sharp decline for ages having steady population losses for the last four or five decades.
It would be accurate to say New Orleans is struggling to return to its slightly less rapid rate of collapse.

Well, New Orleans came out on as national champs of the ‘hood violence league again! I must say Philadelphia made a strong showing in 2007 though…
It amazes me how the MSM can brazenly publish a story like this without remarking about the obvious - the higher the black population in an area, the higher the murder rate.
Talk about ignoring the 500 lb. gorilla in the room.

“The killings are drug-related or retaliatory for the most part, police have said.”
They love to keep pulling that one out, and it’s true, alot of the time. However, many of the victims were murdered during the commission of a crime- robbery, rape, battery, home invasion, etc.
The schools are better because they’ve been using school vouchers to send kids to private and religious schools. The Recovery Schools (an amalgamation of the public schools created after Katrina) don’t have a stellar reputation, but they are alot smaller, so maybe they’re doing somewhat better.

“There are hopeful signs . . . “
Of course. When a situation goes from extremely terrible to just terrible, then it is improving. Don’t let a 30% increase in homicides distract you from the hopeful signs.

Good for them! I knew New Orleans would get back to its usual state in no time.
I anticipate that blacks will eventually kill Mardi Gras, just like they kill every enjoyable civic and social function they force their way into.

“The bloodiest city in the country in 2006, reeling from crime in its struggle to recover from Hurricane Katrina, got even worse in 2007.”
Uhh, no, it was “reeling in crime” well before the hurricane struck. I don’t know if it was the journalist’s intention, but he/she writes as if a hurricane from two years ago has anything to do with blacks committing homicides today. In reality, black majority New Orleans has been this way for many years before “Katrina.”
Speaking of the hurricane, many blacks I read of defended the upswing in robberies because the “government” (i.e. racist white establishment and white taxpayers) was not acting quickly enough to help the “African-American” community. They were hungry and had to survive, so looting was to be expected. Yeah, and I guess that explains why I saw pictures of these low lifes carrying television sets and six-packs of beer in waist-deep water back to their housing projects.

……the addition of two new classes of police recruits this year! And what does this tell you and why are they happy about it?

Mayor Nagin must be delighted that Nouvelle Orleans is “chocolate” once again!!

The bad news comes from the black areas of the city, people really do enjoy the white area. Ebony and Ivory, we never hear about the Ivory part.

“and the addition of two new classes of police recruits in the past year”
Maybe that’s the reason for the chocolate city’s increasing murder rate. Currently, the NOPD have 2 former “officers” on death row.

Only CNN could publish such a story, of course Rush Limbaugh is proven right again, N.O. should be an idyllic utopia, been under Democratic leadership for over half a century, blacks holding high level political offices, taxpayers money passed out at record rates. I don’t think Demoncratic socialism works.

Just like whitey ‘caused’ Katrina and ‘refused to help black folk’, you ca bet your boots that whitey deliberately placed guns in the hands of blacks, passed out free ammo (all done covertly by the CIA and FBI of course)and encouraged blacks to shhot each other.
Oh and by the way, whitey also injects them with AIDS virus, silently , whilstthey are sleeping - nasty, evil, devilish whitey1

Have these National Guardsmen been stripped of their weapons while on patrol? The article doesn’t say, but it’s possible. I dont imagine Nagin likes the idea of Guardsmen shooting (mostly black) crooks and murders (his constituents) in the Big Easy.
If the United States had a proper Gendarmerie (military police) unencumbered by anti-discrimination law and civil rights lawyers, New Orleans, Detroit, and Gary could become livable again.

Lets see here: Mostly black residents, mostly black crime, humm sounds to me like it’s whiteys fault.
Is there ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD where blacks are a majority and it’s safe to walk the streets, day or night??
That d**n white man to blame again..

Very true ZKR but your comment is too deep for leftists to understand; they only grasp proximate causes and never recognize root causes. Leftists will say, “yes, there is a correlation between high black populations and high crime - but only because said crime is gang related and gangs are a particularly black problem”. So we ask this leftist, “why are gangs primarily a black problem?”. His answer: “poverty keeps blacks living on the margins and that causes gangs”. So we ask, “why are blacks more prone to poverty than others?” The leftist will retort,”it’s white racism”. To this we answer, “assuming there is a lot of white racism against blacks, this would be because they are so violent and irresponsible”. The leftist wants us to treat blacks the same as whites or Asians - and then, if we’re lucky, said blacks will change their behavior. What it boils down to is that, in the real world, people must first change their behavior AND THEN demand respect. Not the other way around. Of course, all of this is at the group level. Individuals should always be judged as individuals as long as there is something to judge from.

No No NO! If the population of New Orleans is more like 255,000 persons, the REAL HOMICIDE RATE per 100,000 persons is 82 not 71. Apparently CNN is too challenged by mathematics to know that the story is actually BIGGER than they thought!!!
Instead of the murder rate in New Orleans being merely half again greater than that of Gary or Detroit, the REAL murder rate is almost TWICE that of Gary or Detroit.

There must have been many other areas on the Gulf coast hit by Katrina. How come we never hear about them and how they are doing? Are they White areas? Is that the reason? I am genuinely curious here. Maybe AmRen can do some kind of ‘Katrina follow-up’?

This proves that Black churches are a failure. They clearly are not teaching Thou Shall Not Kill and Thou Shall Not Steal. Instead, they are teaching Blacks to blame Whitey, kill Whitey and rob Whitey. Needless to say, alot of Blacks no longer see the need to attend church to learn something that they can learn from their homies on the streets in a gang. In fact, that means that the Black churches, by teaching hatred, are implicitly endorsing murder and rape. Once the blacks absorb the message that crime is OK and they no longer need to attend church, then some of them begin attending the Nation of Islam’s hate centers. The ministers in the ghettos must be ashamed of themselves, their failure has turned good neighborhoods into slums and ruined an entire race.

Glasgow, Scotland, was on 9.1 murders per 100 000 the other year. Not too many blacks there (though yes, they exist, and are starting make their presence felt). More significant, and relevant to both contexts, is the multitudes of welfare-dependent drinking and drugging teenagers in gangs killing each other over dumb turf squabbles. Also, in both contexts, you will find churches avoiding the issue, rhetoric about the soul of the people, and the view that the town is a fine place to ‘party’. To ‘party’ seems no fun at all.

What do you expect from a place whose motto is “let the good times roll”, Not something like “hard work creates success and opportunity”.
