A group of suspected illegal immigrants was detained wearing life vests early Tuesday morning after being spotted coming out of the water in the La Jolla Cove, police said.

A homeless man flagged police down about 1:55 a.m. and told an officer that he saw several people come out of the water near the Children’s Pool and leave in a large van, said Detective Gary Hassen.

Eight people found inside, some of whom were still wearing life vests, were detained. One man then ran away and has not been found, Hassen said.
