Cockfighting Bust Nets 5,000 Chickens

AP, October 16, 2007

Authorities made what they called the largest cockfighting bust in U.S. history with the seizure of more than 5,000 roosters, hens and chicks from two training grounds, officials said.

Agents found 4,400 chickens Saturday at a 7-acre compound in the Otay Mesa industrial area of San Diego. More than 2,500 birds were seized at the same place six years ago in what was believed to be the nation’s largest bust.

Fifty people were issued misdemeanor citations, punishable by up to one year in jail and a $5,000 fine, and ordered to answer to cockfighting charges in early December, said Paul Levikow, a spokesman for the San Diego County District Attorney’s office. If the defendants have a history of animal cruelty, they may be charged with felonies.

Another 50 people are still being sought, authorities said.

The cockfighting operation was managed and patronized largely by Filipinos, and fights were staged in the San Diego area, Levikow said. Many birds were sent to the Philippines or Hawaii.

Ah! The joys of diversity!!!

I did not realize Filipinos were into this. I always assumed they were the most Americanized of the immigrants, because of U.S. naval bases, their help in WW2, etc.

I guess cockfighting comes from Spanish culture, because that seems to be the uniting factor here. Some Amren posters don’t express much care for animals at times, but I think that our care for ourselves is demonstrated in how much we care for dumb animals.

Seems like the only people who are able to protect at least some aspects of American culture are animal welfare/animal rights people.

Maybe this is where all of our would be Black Doctorates in Poultry Sciences are going. Could it be that we are experiencing a brain drain in the U.S. manifested by Blacks leaving for the Philipines??

I was in the Philippines last year. Cockfighting is on television as much as soccer is on in England.

Although this case in San Diego seems to implicate mainly Filipinos, it reminds me of when I lived in the barrio of East LA. There, the old Mexican men on the block would hang around outside the house across the street on Saturday afternoons, comparing their fighting cocks; stroking them, admiring them. “Oh senor, eez a fine looking bird!” and so on, for hours and hours.

Come midnight, I’d think to myself, that bird might not be so fine-looking anymore — missing half its feathers, slashed from the razors on the opposing bird’s feet, and with half its beak broken off.

It makes me think not only about the cruelty involved in his sport, but also the STUPIDITY. I have to ask myself: what kind of grown man thinks watching a couple of chickens peck each other to death qualifies as ENTERTAINMENT? Sophisticated humans aren’t supposed to find enjoyment in watching suffering. Non-white humans apparently still do.

I’m hoping that cases like this one and the horrendous Michael Vick affair will open America’s eyes to the fact that blacks, hispanics, and Filipinos are involved with these kinds of putrid practises WAY MORE than whites (or Asians).

I’m not a PETA member, or even a vegetarian. But we Europeans collectively “grew out of” this kind of amusement several centuries ago. In Shakespeare’s time, white people used to enjoy bear-baiting — and probably dog-fighting and cock-fighting too. But over the intervening centuries we evolved, and now we wouldn’t dream of it.

Non-whites, however — some of them, at least — still enjoy it in the 21st Century. Those “communities” are also guilty of much more day-to-day animal cruelty, too: I’m sure you’re aware that whatever horrors the shelters in the suburbs might rescue, shelters in ghetto and barrio areas regularly deal with cases MUCH MUCH WORSE.

Something to think about next time they hold one of those huge Amnestia rallies.

I once lived on a farm owned by a three bong hit a day hippy. He had allowed a number of people to dump many unwanted roosters of varying breeds there, so as not to be cruel I presume.

The roosters got on spendidly all winter. Knowing what would be in store come spring I advised him to thin the flock. He replied that this would be against his moral principles.

Spring came and the roosters squared off. Frankly the blind courage of a 1.5# Bantam when confronted by a massive 12# Brahma is a sight to behold. The roosters never complained of a mismatch and never backed down. Of course the roosters have no choice in the matter, it’s do or die for them and purely instinctual. No happy talk or just getting along or working out their differences. Think about the mentality that this appeals to and consider what impact these folks will have on your future.

“America’s eyes to the fact that blacks, hispanics, and Filipinos are involved with these kinds of putrid practises WAY MORE than whites (or Asians).”

Uhhh, Einstein; ‘Filipinos’ are Asian.

Well, what kind of grown man enjoys watching two other grown men pummel other unconscious? Wouldn’t it be nice if we were just as concerned for humans as for chickens?

Compassion and concern for other forms of life seems to be one of the major defining characteristics of Caucasians — perhaps unique to them. An ability to think beyond ourselves and empathize with other creatures. (Yes, I would include Brahmins and Jains in this category.)

Cockfighting has a long history amongst Europeans, and early Americans. Andrew Jackson fought roosters whilst in the White House. The adoption of a very foreign ethical position such as animal rights by a group of people who can so clearly think out of the box (and recognize liberal bias in so many other areas) is a little startling to me.
