Inviting federal immigration agents into town could scare illegal immigrants further underground and make them even more reluctant to call police for help, area police say.

“Do you think they’re going to come forward and report (crimes)?” he asked. “It’s like whack-a-mole—as soon as they step up, boom, they’re gone.”
So the illegal immigrant community stays underground, he said, leaving crimes like extortion, domestic abuse and even murder unchecked.
In Marlborough, Police Chief Mark Leonard said police already work with ICE to make immigration arrests: The federal agency’s warrants pop up just like regular criminal charges during traffic stops.
