China welcomes all efforts by other country’s to help Chinese living abroad integrate into the mainstream society, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said Tuesday.

Jiang made the remarks at a regular briefing in response to a question concerning the head tax which was imposed by the Canadian government from 1885 till 1923.

Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper offered on June 22 a long-awaited formal apology to the Chinese community for the racially motivated tax.

When the head tax failed to curb Chinese immigration the Canadian government passed a law in 1923 that entirely banned Chinese from settling in Canada. That law was repealed in 1947.

The Chinese government has taken notice to this, Jiang said.
