Council of Conservative Citizens and Others Will Picket in Front of WYFF (NBC Greenville)

C of CC press release, May 25, 2006

On Saturday, April 29th, the CofCC called for a protest in front of the office of Lindsey Graham on the corner of Washington and Spring streets in downtown Greenville. The event was to protest Lindsey Graham’s sponsorship of the Senate Amnesty Bill which would grant sweeping amnesty to untold millions and double legal immigration in the first year with more increases after that. Over 1,000 people attended the protest, and the CofCC has strong supportive evidence in the form of photographs and signatures collected at the event.

Despite the turnout of over 1,000 people, making it perhaps the largest anti-amnesty demonstration in the country, WYFF reported that only “dozens” attended. This was not just a major factual error, but a deliberate attempt to misconstrue a story to fit the station’s own editorial bias.

The editorial bias against proponents of a lawful and secure border has been widespread nationwide in the media. A Zogby poll of likely voters released May 3, 2006 gauged support for an enforcement only bill, which passed the US House, and the amnesty bill currently before the Senate. A stunning 64% of all Americans prefer the Enforcement only bill passed by the House. Only 30% of Americans prefer the Senate’s sweeping amnesty bill. Whites were more than twice as likely to support the enforcement only bill, blacks were three times more likely to support enforcement only, and even Hispanics were 16% more likely to support enforcement only. What is more, 66% of everyone said they want immigration reduced.

While the overwhelming majority of American’s are opposed to amnesty and further immigration increases, media outlets across the country would have you think the exact opposite by misconstruing the facts. One claim repeated over and over is that America “needs immigrant labor.” The Zogby poll released May 3rd shows that 74% of likely voters do not believe this claim. Also the media tries to vilify opponents as “racists.” Proponents of Amnesty are always portrayed in a positive light, while opponents are typically portrayed negatively. Attempts by media outlets to vilify activists for a secure border are not only one sided and unfair, they are unethical and childish.

The CofCC and several other organizations will be picketing in front of WYFF at 505 Rutherford St., Greenville, SC on Saturday June 3rd, 2006 from 1:00 PM — 2:00 PM.
