U.S.: Mexican Shot After Crossing Border Was Known Smuggler

MEXICO CITY—A Mexican teen allegedly shot and killed by a U-S Border Patrol agent had been detained in the United States eleven times for smuggling immigrants across the border.

That’s according to a Border Patrol spokesman in San Diego.

The shooting of Guillermo (ee-YEHR’-moh) Martinez has intensified an already heated debate between Mexico and the United States over illegal immigration. It’s also prompted Mexico to open a criminal investigation and send a diplomatic note to Washington.
