PHOENIX—The Arizona Legislature approved a proposal today to declare English as the state’s official language.
That action sends the bill to Democratic Governor Janet Napolitano for her consideration.
The proposal also would require that official government functions be conducted in English.
Supporters say the measure is needed to encourage assimilation of immigrants.
Opponents say the bill isn’t so much about protecting English as it is an attack on illegal immigrants.
