Deshawn Hull planned to wear a coveted new pair of brown Girbaud jeans with a blue stripe to school on Monday.

But the 17-year-old high school junior never got to show off the pants he’d bought over the weekend. As he walked to his bus stop Monday morning, he said, two men tried to steal them, then one shot him when he refused to give them up.

Though the pants didn’t survive intact, he told the Observer, his dignity did.
