Stockton police and school officials consider two of the attacks to be hate crimes, because they appear to have been racially motivated. “It’s obviously very disappointing,” said Bear Creek Principal Bill Toledo. “We have a diverse campus. We try to promote that as a positive.”

One student who was attacked said, “People should have the right to go to school and not be threatened, not have to look over your shoulder.”

The principal said about 20 percent of the student body has been absent since the assaults.
