MOBILE, Ala.—The president of the Mobile chapter of the NAACP was arrested and charged with assault and reckless endangerment for allegedly pistol-whipping a woman and firing the gun, police said.
Lettie Malone posted $4,000 in bail and was released from the Mobile County Metro Jail Tuesday afternoon, according to the jail log. Contacted later, she told the Mobile Register the charges were false.

Police Chief Sam Cochran said that numerous witnesses, including Malone’s father, filed witness statements saying that Malone had beaten the two women and fired shots at them. Cochran said police subsequently took a handgun from Malone’s home that witnesses described as the one she used to fire the shots.
Malone said that police arrested her in retaliation for a complaint she made against an officer who she claimed used racially insensitive language toward her a few weeks ago. Cochran said Malone’s claim of retaliation is “absolutely false.”
