One of the 16-year-olds was subdued with a Tazer by a Chicago police sergeant after he attacked a 45-year-old female teacher who blocked his escape, Herrera said. Police repeatedly demanded the student stop attacking the teacher and was Tazed when he would not, Herrera added.

The second 16-year-old was charged for fighting with another teacher and two security guards.

Some at the school said brawl highlighted two ongoing battles at the school—the mounting racial tensions between black and Latino gangs, and tensions between teachers and school administrators over safety.

“Violence has escalated to the point where safety is a special issue for teachers (here),” Garnett said.
